Q: Who are you?

My name is Maria Violante, and I am a Master of Occupational Therapy student at the University of Pittsburgh.

Q: What can I do here?

This site is a combination of my professional portfolio and resources about occupational therapy.  It's also the home of the RoOT Project, which is designed to provide diversity and inclusive education resources to occupational therapy educators, and a subproject, the Video Interview Bank for Educators (VIBE).

Q: This is an odd looking website.

Thank you for noticing!  Over the last few years, I've had the great privilege of getting to know some amazing individuals with visual impairments.  When designing this site, one of my goals was to make it as accessible as possible.  As a result, there were many features built in to facilitate access, including:

  • Navy background with high contrast text.  Light text on dark backgrounds (especially blue and green backgrounds), is easier to see.  Additionally, many of the fonts chosen for menu items, etc., are extra-large in order to facilitate easy reading.
  • Text-based interface (e.g., buttons and menu items with text instead of pictures), in order to best accommodate screen-reader devices (e.g., JAWS.)
  • Responsiveness:  This site is 100% responsive and mobile-friendly.  That means that it's easy to zoom and that the screen will scale to almost any device.
  • Navigation: The roll-over menu can be accessed by mouse, but for those with dexterity issues, it can also be accessed via a combination of [TAB] and [ENTER].  Additionally, multiple levels of redundant navigation are built in (like links embedded in text and picture menus).  Finally, the entire site is indexed and searchable via the magnifying glass icon in the search bar at the top.

I hope you enjoy looking at my site, and please reach out with any questions or feedback.
